From Idea to Reality: A Community Collaboration in Northbrook

A few months ago, during the depths of a Chicago winter, I found myself reaching out on a mom’s Facebook page. My goal? To brainstorm creative ways to spread the word that EVS Pet Urgent Care was ready to assist pets in need of urgent services. I often approach social media with a sense of apprehension; no matter how harmless my post may seem, there’s always the risk of encountering snarky comments. To my delight, however, this time was different! Instead of negativity, I was met with an incredible outpouring of support.

One of the most notable responses came from Katie, the owner of Club Pilates in Buffalo Grove. She suggested we collaborate and brainstorm ideas together. At first, I felt skeptical—a veterinarian teaming up with a Pilates studio owner to discuss marketing? But I knew I couldn’t turn down such a generous offer. When I arrived at her studio, I was greeted by her warm, friendly demeanor, and that’s when the magic began. Katie’s community-focused marketing strategies blew my mind! It became clear that we needed to do “something” together, but what could it be? Then, the idea struck: Pilates with Kittens!

Katie was enthusiastic, and the next step was to source the kittens. Thankfully, I had a connection with Vicky, the executive director of Evanston Animal Shelter—a woman with a heart of gold. In my 20 years of veterinary practice, I’ve never met anyone as warm and dedicated as Vicky. Her unwavering belief that “we cannot save them all, but I sure as hell am going to try” resonates deeply with me. Her ability to make thoughtful decisions in high-pressure situations is unmatched. We’ve worked closely for over a decade, and I’m proud to call her both a colleague and a friend. When I reached out to Vicky about our event, she was all-in, ready to join the effort!

Additionally, I connected with Victoria, the owner of Squeeze Massage, located in the same strip mall as EVS Pet Urgent Care in Northbrook. After visiting her beautiful studio a few months ago, I was instantly captivated by the peaceful atmosphere, complete with refreshing cucumber water and soothing aromatherapy. Being an animal lover, Victoria was eager to get involved, not just for the kittens, but also to strengthen connections with other small businesses in our community.

Lastly, I can’t forget about PetSmart. As the landlord for EVS Pet Urgent Care in Northbrook, they offer us so much more than just a space to operate. The team at the Northbrook store is genuinely invested in our success and that of the community. Without hesitation, Alex, the store manager, enthusiastically offered, “Yes to anything you need!”

I feel immensely grateful for these remarkable business leaders who are open to innovation, collaboration, and fostering a thriving community where pets and their owners can connect.

From the bottom of my heart—thank you!
